Deep cleaning vs. maintenance cleaning: which do you need?

At Brio, our standard clean is a recurring maintenance clean: the visit that keeps a home in good shape week after week. A deep clean does everything a maintenance clean does, then adds the detail work that builds up slowly and doesn’t need attention every visit. Most homes need a deep clean once to get to a baseline, then recurring cleaning to stay there.

What is maintenance cleaning?

Maintenance cleaning is the regular upkeep of a home that is already in good shape. It’s what most people mean by recurring cleaning: the same team comes on a schedule (weekly, bi-weekly, or monthly) and works through the parts of the house you use every day, so dust, grime, and soap scum never get a chance to pile up.

At Brio this is our standard clean. Every visit covers:

• Kitchen counters, backsplash, sinks, stovetop, the inside of the microwave, and the outside of the fridge, stove, and dishwasher
• A full bathroom clean: showers and tubs, tile and grout, toilets, sinks, mirrors, and counters
• Dusting throughout: shelves, surfaces, electronics, windowsills, blinds, door frames, ceiling fans, and light fixtures
• Light switches wiped down in every room
• Sweeping, mopping, and vacuuming all floors
• Making beds, folding towels, and taking out the trash

A maintenance clean is built for speed and consistency. It keeps a clean home clean, but it isn’t designed to undo months of buildup.

What is deep cleaning?

A deep clean is a reset. It covers everything in a maintenance clean, then goes after the spots that collect dust and grime slowly, the ones nobody notices until they look closely:

• Baseboards hand-detailed throughout the home
• Windowpanes and glass doors cleaned on the inside
• Windowsills and blinds wiped down with a wet microfiber instead of dusted
• Ceiling fans and light fixtures wiped down, with a 3-step ladder for the higher spots
• Woodwork wiped down: door frames and the trim around doors and windows
• Range hood vents cleaned and kitchen walls spot-cleaned
• Closets vacuumed where the floor is reachable, and under the couch cushions

Part of the difference is method, not just scope. On a maintenance clean we dust sills, blinds, fans, and door frames dry. On a deep clean we wipe them down wet, which takes longer but lifts the film that dry dusting leaves behind.

Room by room: what changes

Kitchen

Both cleans take care of the counters, backsplash, sinks, stovetop, cabinet fronts, the inside of the microwave, and the outside of every major appliance. We also move small appliances and counter items to clean under and behind them, within reason.

A deep clean adds the range hood vents, spot-cleans the kitchen walls, hand-details the baseboards, and cleans the inside of any windows.

Bathrooms

Bathrooms get a full clean on every visit, no matter which service you book. That includes the shower or tub, tile and grout scrubbed across the whole surface, the toilet inside and out, sinks, faucets, mirrors, counters, and a spot-check of the walls for splashes.

A deep clean adds hand-detailed baseboards, wet-wiped sills and blinds, the inside of any window glass, and wiped-down fans, fixtures, and woodwork.

Bedrooms, living rooms, and hallways

A maintenance clean dusts every reachable surface, including shelves, electronics, wall art, sills, blinds, fans, and door frames. It also vacuums and mops the floors, makes the beds, and takes out the trash.

A deep clean switches the dusting to a wet wipe on sills, blinds, fans, fixtures, and woodwork. It also hand-details the baseboards, cleans windows and glass doors on the inside, vacuums out the closets, and vacuums under the couch cushions.

What neither clean includes

A deep clean does not include inside the oven, inside the refrigerator, or inside cabinets and drawers. Those tasks are part of our move-in / move-out service, since they make the most sense in an empty home.

If you want them on a regular visit, you can add them. We offer an inside-oven chemical scrub, a few levels of fridge cleaning, and inside kitchen cabinets as add-ons to either a maintenance or a deep clean.

When to book a deep clean

We recommend a deep clean if:

• It has been more than a month or two since your last professional cleaning
• You’re getting the house ready for guests, the holidays, or an event
• You’re about to start recurring cleaning and want everything at a baseline first
• You’re coming back after pausing your cleaning plan for a while
• You just finished a small home project, like painting a room or replacing a fixture, and the dust has settled everywhere

If none of those apply and your home was cleaned professionally in the last few weeks, a maintenance clean is usually all you need. And if you’re moving in or out of an empty home, book our move-in / move-out cleaning instead: it goes further than a deep clean, inside the cabinets, oven, and fridge.

Deep clean first, then recurring cleaning

Most of our Richmond clients start the same way: one deep clean to bring the home to a baseline, then a standard clean on a schedule to keep it there.

The deep clean does the heavy lifting once. After that, every recurring visit starts from a clean home instead of fighting buildup, which is why maintenance cleans can stay shorter, stay consistent, and stay at a flat rate. Recurring cleaning doesn’t make deep cleans unnecessary forever, though. Even a home on a weekly plan slowly collects dust on baseboards, trim, and window glass, because those spots aren’t part of every visit. How pricing and timing compare

A standard clean starts at $185 and usually takes 2 to 3 hours. It’s a true flat rate: the price you’re quoted is the price you pay. Recurring plans are discounted too, and the more often we come, the more you save. Weekly saves the most, then bi-weekly, then monthly (every 4 weeks).

A deep clean starts at $230 and usually takes 3 to 4 hours. It’s quoted upfront as an estimate based on your home’s size and condition, because a home that hasn’t been cleaned in a while can take longer than expected. If it does, we text you before going past your estimate, and extra time is billed at $125 per hour, prorated.

Is a deep clean worth it before starting recurring cleaning?

Yes, if it has been more than a month or two since your last professional clean. Starting from a baseline means your recurring visits keep the home clean instead of spending every visit catching up.

How long does each clean take?

Does deep cleaning include the oven and fridge?

No. Inside the oven, fridge, and cabinets is part of our move-in / move-out service. You can add the oven, the fridge, or kitchen cabinets to a deep or maintenance clean as add-ons.

Do recurring cleanings cost less?

Yes. Recurring standard cleans are discounted, and the discount grows with how often we come: weekly saves the most, then bi-weekly, then monthly.

Why is a deep clean an estimate and a standard clean a flat rate?

A maintenance clean covers a home that’s already in good shape, so the time it takes is predictable. A deep clean depends on how much buildup is there, which is hard to know until the team is in the home. The estimate keeps the quote honest, and we text you before going past it.

Do I still need deep cleans if I have a maintenance plan?

Once or twice a year, yes. Recurring cleaning keeps up with daily life, but baseboards, trim, and window glass still collect dust between deep cleans. A spring and a pre-holiday deep clean keep the whole home in shape.
