How often should you have your house cleaned?
A simple guide to choosing between weekly, bi-weekly, and monthly house cleaning, based on your household size, pets, kids, and how much you tidy in between.
One of the first questions new clients ask us is how often they actually need a cleaner. There’s no single right answer. It depends on your home, your schedule, and how much upkeep you’re comfortable doing yourself between visits.
Weekly cleaning visits
Weekly is the right call if you just like your home clean, full stop. You notice when things start to slip and don’t want to wait two weeks to reset. It’s also a fit for very busy households with no time to tidy in between visits. With weekly service, dirt never gets the chance to build up, so each clean tends to be quicker and lighter than a bi-weekly one.
Bi-weekly cleaning visits
Our default recommendation once there are kids or pets in the house. Every two weeks keeps dust, bathrooms, and kitchens under control, but honestly, that’s not even the main reason we push for it. It’s about giving you back a chunk of your schedule so you’re spending it on your family instead of chasing dog hair or wiping fingerprints off the windows. You’ll still do some light tidying in between, but the deep work stays with us.
Signs you picked the wrong cadence:
- Pets: hair builds back up on floors and furniture well before your next visit
- Kids: fingerprints and smudges on glass and windows creep back before we’re due to return
If either of those sounds familiar, it’s usually a sign every 4 weeks isn’t tight enough and it’s time to move up to bi-weekly.
Monthly cleaning visits
In practice, our “monthly” plan runs on a 4-week cycle rather than the calendar, so you get about 13 visits a year instead of 12. It’s our most popular cadence, especially with couples who don’t have kids or pets, keep up with the day-to-day tidiness themselves, and just want a reliable, deeper reset. I’ll be honest: it’s what my own wife and I use at our house. We don’t have kids or pets, and every 4 weeks is plenty to keep things feeling reset. Because more accumulates between visits, a monthly clean usually takes a little longer than a weekly or bi-weekly one.
One-time and seasonal
A one-time or seasonal clean fits a few different people: if you’re watching your budget, if you’re rarely home and don’t want to pay for regular visits, or if you clean just fine yourself but want a professional deep clean every so often. It’s also the right call after a renovation or at the change of seasons. We also do a lot of move-in and move-out cleans, those don’t follow any real seasonal pattern, they simply happen whenever you’re heading into or out of a property.
Still not sure? Tell us about your home and we’ll recommend a cadence that fits.
